Coir Products: The Best Use of Natural Resources

The entire mankind has been using natural resources since ancient time. Among all the natural resources coir fibers and coir products are mostly used by people. Coir is a natural fiber extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products such as ropes, doormats, floor mats and so on. Basically coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut.

There are three types of coir:
Brown Coir: These are made from ripe coconut and used for sacking and padding.
White Coir: These are made from unripe coconut and used for making brushes, rope, fishing nets and strings.
Bristles Coir: These are made from retted coconut husks and used for making bristles of brushes for domestic applications.
The coir product industry is particularly important in some specific areas, mostly in coastal areas of tropical countries. Around 90 percent of the total coir products are made in the coastal areas.

Products:
There are many coir products which people use in their daily lives.
Coir Fiber: Obtained from outer shell of the coconut and used to make brushes, fishnets and woven into matting.
Coir Yarn: Spun from coir fiber by hand or sometimes machines. It is basically a raw material used to make other coir products.
Coir Ropes: Made from coconut fiber used by every single household for domestic work.
Coir Mats: Made on handloom or power looms with or without brushes. It is available in wide range of colors, sizes and designs.


They are used as doormats.
Coir Matting: The most useful thing for floor furnishing.
Coir Tiles: Matting are cut, rubberized and finished with narrow edges to make coir tiles. They are generally used for interior decorations.
Coir Mourzouk: A carpet in coir trade is called a mourzouk. They are also used for furnishing.
Acoustic Barriers: Coir is being used to prevent noise pollution especially for those who live near highways.
Coir Geotextiles: It is a permeable textile fabric to prevent the soil from migrating while maintaining the water flow.
Coir Fiber Beds: Generally known as cocobeds. These are made from coir fibers and coir geotextiles. It helps to grow plants and purify water to some extent.

These are some coir products used by people. Other than this coir waste can also be used to produce byproducts which help for soil treatment.
